Single Dads of Daughters – The First Period Talk
For all you single fathers of little girls, we feel for you. Trying to find the right way to handle your daughter's adolescence and looking for the right words to say when it's time to talk to her about “getting her first period” can't be easy. There are several things we want to help you keep in mind when it's time to have the conversation:
1) Remember, this is as uncomfortable a topic for her as it is for you. She doesn't want to have the talk any more than you want to deliver the message, but it is important to be open and show her that you are prepared to answer any questions she may have.
2) Do your homework. Because you have never experienced menstruation yourself, it might be a good idea to do some reading on the topic, or speak with other experienced women in your life, so you are giving the right advice.
3) Be prepared to answer questions. You are bringing up the subject to her, so she may think you have more knowledge than you do. Be prepared to answer questions such as “do all girls get cramps?” and “how long will it last?”
4) Stay calm and don't laugh. If you're daughter gets the impression that her questions are silly, she will close up and feel uncomfortable talking to you about the topic at all.
5) Consider giving her a book for more information. She's likely to have LOTS of questions that she may not think to ask you at the time you have the conversation, and may feel uncomfortable bringing up later. Have a book on hand that she can reference whenever she might need to know more.
6) Position this as an exciting, happy time! Many women complain about their periods and talk about it in a negative way, but getting your FIRST period is a special occasion showing entrance into womanhood, so be sure to make her feel happy about this, not scared or depressed.
Because every girl “becomes a woman” at different ages, it may be difficult for you to know when it is time to have the talk. You may want to have the conversation as early as age 9 so she is prepared if it comes early.
